How to Ace the Corporate Board Seat Interview

The corporate board interview is an important assessment tool for both the candidate as well as the company. The process can last months, involve multiple conversations and board members getting acquainted with the candidates on a deeper level. Candidates must be prepared to answer questions regarding their experiences, their knowledge of the industry and how they can be able to contribute to the work of the board.

The right tone and approach is critical to landing the job. It is crucial to be approachable and relatable, but it is also important to see demonstrate your ability to ask difficult questions and challenge the status-quo. Boards are not looking for people who cheer, but rather incisive and shrewd board members. Insisting on a positive review of the company is a common mistake. This could be interpreted by the board as empty flattery and could negatively impact your candidacy.

Prepare to give specific examples of your achievements and successes, especially on a strategic level. This will show that you have the experience and leadership abilities to add value to an organization’s board.

This is especially important for VC and PE backed companies, where investment representatives must declare their current relationships with portfolio companies in order to avoid legal ramifications down the road in the event that they are appointed on boards of investments that their firm holds a stake in.
