Virtual Technology Review in Tourism and Hospitality

Virtual technology is a procedure that creates a digital replica of a physical event device, such as an online game or trade exhibition. The term virtual is used in order to differentiate the replica from the original, although it isn’t less real. Virtual machines (VM) are software-based emulators of physical hardware, such as a server or desktop computer. These devices don’t need to physically be removed from a data center and are accessible at the same time as physical devices in other locations.

The development of VR has created new opportunities for tourism development as well as opened a research era on the experience economy. However, VR research has not been fully integrated into the wider tourism literature. This article seeks to fill this gap by reading the literature on VR/AR/MR within tourism and hospitality.

Using the SCOPUS database, 80 studies from the SCOPUS database important link were selected and their characteristics and trends were examined. Since 2018, the amount of VR/AR/MR research papers in higher education has grown rapidly. This is because of the affordability of the devices. It is also clear that the VR/AR/MR applications are specifically targeted at undergraduates with science, engineering and medicine as primary research objects. Humanities research, as well as social science subjects like art and history is still a rarity.

VR/AR/MR could help students improve their in their skills, knowledge and confidence. It can also be used to improve the medical education of students and increase compassion for patients. Immersive VR, as an example helps medical students develop empathy for elderly patients suffering from aging-related diseases and provide them with the opportunity to examine patients suffering from dyspnea.
